Mildred Pierce – trailer review
HBO will air in 2011 their version of the classic Oscar-winning film Mildred Pierce (an adaptation of a novel with the same title). Mildred Pierce (1941) is set in California in the time of the Great Depression, and in many ways this production is similar to another one of HBO – Boardwalk Empire.
Both Boardwalk Empire and Mildred Pierce are adaptations, and both take place in the first half of the 20th century. Both stories are set in a specific time in the history of the united states, times that were affected by great changes. And both productions are supposed to bring HBO to its days of glory.
In many ways the success of either one of those productions will set the tone of HBO’s productions in the next years: will they go more for the thrill (following True Blood and Boardwalk Empire) or for the drill (The Sopranos, Mildred Pierce).
It is also very interesting to watch the differences between the two adaptations of Mildred Pierce – the 1941 film seems to suggest a different interpretation than that of HBO mini-series. Kate Winslet vs. Joan Crawford sounds like quite a match!
