Girls Season 1 Episode 6 Recap – ‘The Return’
SEB: girls s01e06 episode review
This week on HBO’s Girls Hannah went back for “Home-home”, to be with her parents on their anniversary. That was of course just a scripting tool to allow us, and Hannah herself, to see how it is back there – and to be her parents’ child for a stolen moment. Only it didn’t happen exactly like that.
It was clear Hannah can’t stand being with her parents the way it used to be – and listen to what they say about themselves and especially not about her. Then her mother needed her to go and get her some hormone-pills (is it really like that when you’re 50? The scene when the mother wakes up Hannah made me think of a spin-off for Girls) – and then Hannah meets the pharmacist.
The promo for this episode could make you think it was Hannah’s date lying on the floor in the bathroom – and that it was her mother saving the moment. But no, the sex with Adam didn’t bring to any emergency, and it was Hanna who handled the situation of her father’s fall (after having sex with her mother in the shower) – in the best way possible. She didn’t tell her parents she lost her job – but she did much more than that. She showed them who she was. Action speaks stronger than words, any writer knows that.
The whole story in The Return was not so important in itself. Each part of the story was interesting and fun – like the benefit party for Carey – with the dance scene. Seeing it through the eyes of Hannah, the suburbs are a constant reminder of who you can always choose to be – when you’re done trying hard enough. She hates it and loves it at the same time, and this made our trip with her there so much fun.
But the most intense moment in this episode was the last scene, when Hannah takes Adam (on the phone) to the garden, and he tells her what he sees from his window in NY. After having suburban sex with the pharmacist and saving her father from a “sex accident”, Hannah knows who she is and where her place is. And it’s not in her parents’ place.
Will her new confidence help Hannah with her life in New York? How will she continue with Adam now, and will he still be there for her in the lonely nights of season 2?
