I also told you that David Rasche joins the cast as a rival for George Christopher (Ted Danson).

Now I have a couple of new cast updates for you. The first one is still related to Ted Danson. His wife Mary Steenburgen joins the cast, in the role of George Christopher’s vocal coach, hired to help him prepare for a charity fundraiser appearance.

The second addition to the show’s cast is Zach Woods, who you might remember from the last season of The Office. Woods will play a fan of cartoonist Ray (Zach Galifianakis). The finale of season 2 was about a fan that tried to kill Ray.

After listing my Best 5 New TV Series Of 2010, it’s time to check how the older and wiser series are doing. Of course it’s a tough call to make, as there are many good shows that are still on, and in some cases the more they’re here the harder it gets to really appreciate them. Any series that is around for more than a couple of seasons had its good and not-so-good seasons. Glee, Weeds, Mad Men – they all are excellent shows that went up and down. In this list I was trying to look at 2010 only, and list the very best shows that 2010 brought us. Here it is.

Community –
Community showed that some TV series can be all-in-one. The episodes of Community share the same wonderful cast, but vary in tone and structure. The versatility of this show just proves how, in some cases, TV can be just like life. Sometimes foolish, sometimes melancholic, and always original.
With its second season currently airing, it looks like this non-formula TV series may stick around for a few more seasons. Let’s hope the Spanish class of Community will not finish their studies too soon.

Mad Men-
In the beginning it was the spectacle of the 1960s, the cigarettes and the cheating. Then it was all about the cast, and especially the women of Mad Men. With its fourth season behind us and half a year before the beginning of season 5, Mad Men simply delivers good original drama, with an inspiring set design (see: Boardwalk Empire) and characters that never cease to grow.
There were rumors that Mad Men will have 3 more seasons, and that season 7 will be the last season of the show, but those were not yet officially confirmed by AMC.

Breaking Bad –
Where should I begin here? Breaking Bad is first of all its premise – a chemistry teacher turnes meth chef. But here is a demonstration on just how a premise is only the first step, and not the last. This series is a master in character, and this is true to almost every one in it, even the stats. And when the plot takes the front it is never a waste. Every plot twist is unpredictible and isrelated directly to the reality of the characters. They even treat the baby (Holly) like a person, and not like a prop (see: Sons Of Anarchy). The performances are awards-worthy, and the shooting takes part in the drama. I’ve mentioned on my reviews of the show the excellent pre-title sequences, and the use of flash-forward in theseries. The different cinematography motifs create another level in the drama, making Breaking Bad a true masterpiece where form is always another layer in the rich content.

Boardwalk Empire
Although it appears also on my Best-New-TV-Series-Of-2010 list, Boardwalk Empire is good enough for two lists. I’ve missed some real gangsters on my screen ever since Tony and Carmela were left in the dark, and here HBO has done it again. The feel of the time and place – the dresses, the quietness, the awakening of 1920′s Atlantic City – is what makes Boardwalk Empire feel like a lesson in history. Not at all about the origins of Tony and his fellas, but of us. Margaret, Angela and the rest of the women are so interesting to watch simply because it was one of the most significant times for women. And of course, the performances, and the camera work, and the sins. All those sins.

Almost best: Bored to Death, Terriers, Eastbound & Down.

The season’s finale of Bored To Death left me hungry for more. This series is such a good mix of everything, and yet it is unlike anyother. A poet once said, when asked why does he love his wife: ‘there are many girls more beautiful than her, but not one as beautiful’. But perhaps to talk poetry now would be slightly exaggerated. I think the term Noir-otic Comedy (that’s been used in the ads for the show) says it all.

Super Ray Is Mortal was a brilliantly crafted episode, with funny jokes (“thanks, Walter”), fun action, and even a thrill. The dialogue is sharp and accurate, the characters are surprising even to themselves, and time is flying by. I just hope HBO won’t let us wait too long for season 3 of Bored. September 2011 is so far away, but still this show proved to be just as fun in re-runs.

What will happen in season 3 of Bored To Death? We’ll wait for some more leaking juice before writing that one.

In three days (November 14th) Bored to Death will have its season 2 finale, ‘Super Ray is Mortal!’. In the season’s finale (episode 16, or 208, or 8, as you wish to call it) Ray and Jonathan are tracking down Ray’s stalker. Bored to Death is slightly smarter than other comedies of its kind, and it’s always filled with references to classic films, art, or just crap we think is good enough to remember. Having a writer in the center of a series is a great excuse of making the show self-aware, and hopefully season 3 (which will air September 2011 based on seasons 1 and 2 premiere date) will continue this.

The characters are all so wonderful, and for time they have on screen (25-min episodes) they are all beautifully rounded. Here’s a quick recap of season 2 episode 7, ‘Escape from the Castle’:

The episode was shot partly in the real Spa Castle in Queens. I loved this location, and next time I’m around I’ll try to visit – maybe not all the models will attend, but certainly some will..no? The whole episode was to resemble Some Like It Hot and it indeed had the same feel of easiness and silliness. The bandage Jonathan wears on his face is an homage to Polanski’s Chinatown. When you think about it, Jonathan looks a bit like the young Polanski himself, in, say, The Tenant.

I loved to see all those naked men in the showers, but the camera didn’t give them half the time the naked ladies got. Not fair, boys. And finally, my favorite quote from this episode is from Ted’s monologue:

I want to be insane like Klaus Kinski

See you later, in the season 2 finale recap, with speculations about season 3 of Bored to Death!
